Tell Washington that people who use wheelchairs deserve to travel safely in planes

The current standard for air travel for people who use wheelchairs is exhausting, dangerous, often embarrassing and utterly unacceptable. People are forced to transfer from their personal chairs to ill-fitting and ill-equipped chairs, and their personal chairs are loaded below the plane during flight with no guarantee that they will come back in one piece.

On May 15, Ben Trockman (2012 National Ambassador for Easter Seals) is meeting with key policymakers in Washington to demand that something be done. His proposal below outlines ways that airlines can accommodate people using wheelchairs.

Tell decision-makers in Washington that people who use wheelchairs have the right to travel safely and comfortably on airplanes, just like anybody else. Add your name to Ben's proposal below.

Make air travel safe and accessible for people who use wheelchairs

Dear  Decision-maker,

I'm writing to you as an Easter Seals supporter urging you to amend the Air Carrier Access Act to require better accommodations for people who use wheelchairs.

The current standard for air travel for people who use power wheelchairs is exhausting, dangerous, often embarrassing and utterly unacceptable. If airlines made a few changes to their planes, people who use power wheelchairs could travel safely and comfortably in their own chairs.

Here's my proposal. People who use power wheelchairs need to be able to use our power chairs as our seat so we do not have to transfer in and out, avoiding health concerns and comfort issues.

Airlines are businesses with a focus on profit, so they're unlikely to make adaptations for people who use wheelchairs to fly unless mandated to do so. That's why I'm urging you to amend the Air Carrier Access Act to require better accommodations for people in power wheelchairs to fly safely, comfortably and with dignity.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
