First Saturday
How did you spend your last Saturday evening? Many of us look forward to this day of the week as a chance to gather with friends, catch up on each others’ lives, have some fun and maybe even do a little dancing. For people with disabilities it’s really no different, and Easter Seals Oregon’s First Saturday dance provides that opportunity to over 70 people each month. The first Saturday of each month teens and adults with a variety of abilities gather at the Santo Community Center in Medford for an evening of fun, socializing and dancing. Just observe the crowds arriving early, all dressed up, laughing and greeting one another, and it quickly becomes apparent how important this community based event is to so many people. As one participant says: "Well all I have to say is I love these dances, and I always have a great time all the time! I love them--they are so fun!" The evening includes a dance with a live DJ, games, movies and refreshments. Easter Seals Oregon provides volunteer chaperones at a 4:1 ratio. If participants require one-on-one supervision, we request that families or care providers assist us in staffing the event. First Saturday is open to people of all ability levels who are 16 years of age or older. Reservations are not required.
Supervision is provided at a 1:10 ratio; those requiring closer supervision must make their own arrangements. Emergency contact information is required for all participants.
