Preventing, Diagnosing and Treating Disabilities

Medical rehabilitation focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disabilities to help individuals live with greater independence. Easter Seals' medical professionals work together to restore function lost due to temporary conditions such as lower back pain, or permanent disabilities, such as traumatic brain injury. Easter Seals also promotes quality of life for individuals with disabilities through education and prevention programs.

Easter Seals is offering an innovative, intensive program that is unique to us but has been achieving significant results in other parts of the country.  It has allowed children to accelerate their progress in achieving developmental milestones. The program is called SuitAbility because it incorporates the Universal Exercise Unit and a TheraSuit to facilitate and accelerate the child’s skill development. Our SuitAbility program provides intense physical therapy for children over three years old with cerebral palsy, developmental delays, traumatic brain injury, post stroke, and other nervous/muscular disorders. Benefits include improved head and trunk control, improved balance and coordination, decreased uncontrolled movements, improved body and spatial awareness, strengthening, improved speech production and fluency, improved gait pattern, and increased development of fine and gross motor skills. Speech and occupational therapy will be utilized in a traditional manner as needed.

The Universal Exercise Unit allows each patient to perform independent and isolated movements with gravity eliminated (via suspension) for strengthening activities. The unit also allows the child to develop dynamic skills while they are supported and the therapist facilitates transitional movements. The TheraSuit was designed by a husband and wife who are physical therapists, whose daughter has cerebral palsy.  The suit consists of a cap, vest, shorts, kneepads and shoes with hooks and bungee-like cords adjusted to provide resistance and tactile input. This provides proprioceptive input, which is awareness of the body’s position, location, orientation and movement of the joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons. It also facilitates symmetrical alignment of the body during therapy. To learn more about this important addition to Easter Seals therapuetic programs please call Easter Seals at 330-743-1168.
