Easter Seals Honors Congressman Markey with Advocacy Award
Easter Seals President Kirk Joslin, right, recently presented U.S. Rep. Ed Markey with the Easter Seals Outstanding Advocate Award for Elected Officials. This national award is presented annually to an elected or appointed federal, state or municipal official who has made a significant impact on the quality of life for people with disabilities.
Markey introduced the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, which was passed in 2010. This law enables Americans with disabilities to use a wide range of devices and services, including smart phones, to access the Internet, closed captioning for online video, audio descriptions of television programming, audible emergency alerts and other technologies.
Also shown in the photo is Sheila Joslin. The congressman, who represents the Massachusetts 7th district, received the award Aug. 28 at an event in Holliston.

During the MetroWest Legislative Roundtable on February 17, 2012, Sam Klobucher advocated on behalf of Easter Seals Massachusetts for assistive technology. Sam described how he uses his DynaVox computer to communicate and the importance of more people with disabilities having more rights and access to new technologies. Paul Spooner, Executive Director for the MetroWest Center for Independent Living, explained how essential Independent Living Services are to people with disabilities. The following legislators were in attendance: Senator Jamie Eldridge, Senator Karen E. Spilka, Representative Tom Sannicandro, Representative Chris Walsh and Representative Dan Winslow.
The 6th annual Central Massachusetts roundtable sponsored by the Center for Living & Working, Elder Services of Worcester Area and Easter Seals Massachusetts was held on Friday, February 10, 2012. We thank Senator Michael Moore, Senator Flanagan’s District Director- Carly Antonellis, Rep. Peter Durant, Rep. Paul Frost, Rep. Peterson- David Muradian, Legislative Aide, Rep. John Mahoney and Rep. Jim O'Day for being part of today's successful roundtable. We also thank our guest speakers Debbie Malone and Cindy Purcell who graciously shared their insightful stories with us.
Michael Counterman did a great job advocating for assistive technology at the Greater Brockton Area Legislative Roundtable on January 27, 2012 in Brockton - sponsored by Easter Seals Massachusetts, Independence Associates CIL and Old Colony Elder Services. State Senator John F. Keenan,
State Representative Michael D. Brady, State Representative Christine E. Canavan and
State Representative Louis L. Kafka carefully listened to Michael as he described how assistive technology makes him more independent.

Easter Seals Massachusetts and the MetroWest Center for Independent Living successfully held its first legislative roundtable on Friday, February 4, 2011 in Framingham. The following legislators attended the event and heard about the important services that both organizations provide to their constituents: Senator James B. Eldridge, Senator Karen Spilka, Representative Carolyn C. Dykema, Representative David Paul Linsky, Representative Tom Sannicandro, and Representative Chris Walsh.

On Friday, January 22, 2010, Easter Seals Massachusetts and the Center for Living & Working Inc. hosted a Legislative Roundtable with nine local state legislators. Clients shared their stories on how various disability services help them remain independent in the community.
