Legislative Action Network is Now Web-based

Easter Seals Legislative Action Network (LAN) members now find it easier than ever to inform their federal and state legislators about issues that are important to people with disabilities.

The LAN makes greater use of the Internet to update members about fast-breaking, important issues.  Through the enhanced use of the Web, members can also receive templates of letters that they can modify and send to their legislators with the click of a button.

“Easter Seals is deeply committed to protecting services that enable people with disabilities to expand their independence,” Joe Bellil, Easter Seals vice president of public affairs, said.  “Through this project, we are able to more carefully watch both state and federal issues and respond in a timelier, more effective matter.”

Members also have online access to Easter Seals’ legislative priorities, as well as contact information for their state senators and representatives and helpful links.  The project is a joint effort with national Easter Seals.

Easter Seals Honors Congressman Markey with Advocacy Award

Easter Seals President Kirk Joslin, right, recently presented U.S. Rep. Ed Markey with the Easter Seals Outstanding Advocate Award for Elected Officials.  This national award is presented annually to an elected or appointed federal, state or municipal official who has made a significant impact on the quality of life for people with disabilities.

Markey introduced the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, which was passed in 2010.  This law enables Americans with disabilities to use a wide range of devices and services, including smart phones, to access the Internet, closed captioning for online video, audio descriptions of television programming, audible emergency alerts and other technologies.
