2014 Team Hoyt and Empowerment Awards

The Team Hoyt Award

One of the region’s foremost civic leaders, Jim Brett is president and CEO of the New England Council, an alliance of schools, hospitals, corporations and organizations promoting economic growth and a high quality of life.

He also is a leading advocate for people with disabilities and for public policies that expand their opportunities. Jim’s commitment is personal – he grew up with a brother, Jack, who had disabilities. Just as his family celebrated Jack’s special gifts, Jim is dedicated to the belief that every person has something special to contribute to the community.

Empowerment Award:  Live

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, one of top facilities of its kind nationwide, was in the spotlight last year for the care it gave to some of the most severely injured victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Spaulding and Easter Seals share a commitment to empowering people with disabilities to reach their full potential.  More than a colleague, Spaulding also has been a generous donor to Easter Seals.

Empowerment Award:  Learn

Charles Carr is an advocate, manager and public policy leader who has dedicated his career to advancing independence for people with disabilities through social and economic policies and programs.

He is a nationally recognized leader in the independent living movement and, as commissioner of the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission, has been an indispensable partner to Easter Seals.

Empowerment Award:  Work

Ernst & Young has a corporate commitment to providing a welcoming and supportive workplace for people with disabilities and employees who have family members with disabilities.

Their Access Ability Employee Resource Group ensures that disability messaging and educational materials are part of every communication, meeting and event.

Empowerment Award:  Play

Nancy J. Bazanchuk leads the Disability Resources Program for the Springfield-based Center for Human Development.  No other program in the state offers the scope and variety of recreational and social programs for teens and young adults with disabilities.

Nancy also is a leader, mentor and role model and has played an active role in the Easter Seals Youth Leadership Network.
