Planned Giving

Many friends want to ensure their commitment to Easter Seals East Georgia carries on after they are gone, so we can continue to offer vital programs for people with disabilities and their families. They remember Easter Seals East Georgia through a direct bequest in their will, or through a planned financial vehicle arranged during their lifetimes.

Many financial arrangements that assist Easter Seals East Georgia in helping those in need include direct benefits to the donor, such as charitable tax deductions and stable income sources. In fact, well-planned charitable giving vehicles can significantly enhance your ability to meet financial and estate objectives for your family. The story below is a real example of how this has been done.

The Legacy of Dorothy Kellogg and Mildred McDermott

Dorothy Kellogg contracted polio at the age of 2. As she grew up, the leg braces she wore to help her walk didn't prevent her from fulfilling many of her heart's desires. Dorothy had a passion for horses. "When walking is difficult and painful," she said, "riding a horse is wonderful! Even the slowest walk along the trails gives me a feeling of movement and freedom that I don't usually have."

Dorothy loved to ride the trails at her Vaughn Bay home atop her horse, Beauty. There she maintained the farmhouse, stable, orchard and gardens. Upon Dorothy's death, her sister, Mildred McDermott, donated the home and 17 acres to Easter Seals.

Mildred taught elementary school children for 46 years, and was well known for her devotion to children and people with disabilities. Mildred conceived the idea of Camp Easter Seals as a way to share her sister's inspiration with other people.

Camp Easter Seals has grown during the past 20 years, from the original 17 acres to more than 50 acres, and also has expanded to support nationally recognized programs. This legacy of love was established by two "ordinary" people with a vision of overcoming limitations.

Now, the spirit of Dorothy Kellogg and the generosity of Mildred McDermott live on in a vibrant, innovative facility enjoyed by thousands of families, each building new lives.

The legacy you envision can lead you to reflect on your resources. Every gift--large and small--can make a difference.
