Early Childhood Social/Emotional Development Program

Easter Seals North Georgia’s Child Development Centers, as well as child care centers across the country, are experiencing an increase in the number of children who are aggressive and disruptive in the classroom.  These behaviors are predictive of early school failure.  To address this issue, the Early Childhood Social/Emotional Development Program will target children ages 3 to 5 who exhibit aggressive behavior, need additional support in developing pro-social skills or are considered “at risk” due to exposure to a number of demographic risk factors.

The program will utilize the Incredible Years Dinosaur Treatment Program

The Incredible Years

for children with behavior problems, which is a comprehensive curriculum designed to promote social competence and prevent, reduce and treat aggression and related conduct problems in young children.  This is done through the use of Dina and Wally, puppets that connect with the child and encourage pro-social behavior.  Children referred to the program will work in small groups and show measurable gains in their social/emotional and behavioral skills.  The program will also work extensively with parents and teachers.

Ultimately, the program will provide parents and teachers with strategies to deal with children’s over-activity and behavior problems.
