Why Work with Easter Seals?

Strong:

  • Founded in 1933, Easter Seals Greater Washington-Baltimore Region now operates through 19 locations with approximately 175 employees and a $12 million budget
  • We have continued to grow through the recession with no layoffs
  • Our committed Board of Directors won both “Best Give/Get Easter Seals Board” and "Best Board in the World" from Easter Seals Inc.
  • The Easter Seals brand is universally known and valued at $5 billion

 Innovative:

  • Our focus on intergenerational care produces better outcomes for our clients (fewer falls and less depression for seniors, higher reading scores for children) and has brought us international recognition
  • All our programs use benchmarking and national accreditation standards to ensure we are always on the cutting edge of care
  • We use public-private partnerships to move quickly when clients need us. For example, as the population of Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed swelled, we enrolled Little Warriors (their children) in our Early Childhood Education program without waiting for formal protocols. This ensured that Wounded Warriors and their spouses knew that their children were receiving the best early childhood education to be school-ready
  • We seek to add one or two new programs each year. Over the past few years, we have opened the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Inter-Generational Center, moved into Workforce Development through the Veterans Workforce Investment Program, expanded Respite Services for the Air Force and Navy, renovated and added classrooms to our Child Development Centers in DC and Silver Spring

Mission-Driven:

  • Easter Seals has been ranked first among National Health Council members for the highest percentage of program dollars spent on direct services for nearly 30 consecutive years
  • Our unique and dedicated regional staff of over 170 professionals includes specialists in education, therapy, senior services, social work, assistive technology, nursing, and related professions
  • The 2011 Chronicle of Philanthropy “Philanthropy 400” lists Easter Seals at 119, with charitable donations up 10.5 percent from 2010

Critical to the community:

Wounded Warriors, Active Duty Military, and Veterans:

  • Veterans with a service-connected disability have increased 39 percent since 1990 and the disability ratings are higher than in the past
  • The unemployment rate for veterans is higher than the national average
  • The number of Wounded Warriors being treated at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda and Dewitt Community Hospital at Fort Belvoir has increased dramatically
  • Currently, almost 1.6 million serve in the U.S. Military as active-duty personnel, while more than 369,000 do so outside the United States and its territories

Seniors:

  • The 85+ population served by our Senior+ and Adult Medical Day Programs is the fastest-growing segment of the population
  • 1 in 8 baby boomers who reach age 65 will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia
  • Our clients retain independence instead of being institutionalized in a nursing home, and our care costs the community about 80 percent less

Young Children:

  • Early intervention produces the best results – children are school-ready and for every $1 we spend society saves $7 on remedial therapies and social justice costs
  • The need for services is increasing with the rise in the number of children with Autism
  • Every year, 1.45 million children under the age of five nationally are at risk of developmental delays and fail to go identified – Easter Seals detects those delays quickly

Caregivers:

  • 1 in 4 adults will be a caregiver at some point in their life
  • Businesses report $34 billion in lost productivity every year due to caregiver issues
  • Caregiver stress is a leading cause of child and elder abuse
  • Caregiver burnout causes premature institutionalization of seniors leading to higher health care costs
